Indian Junior Scout Stroker Pistons
This is a brand-new quality product from the famous “Truett & Osborn” company designed for use in Harley-Davison 45” stroker engines for street or racing use.
At first glance, they appear to be a fair match for Indian Junior Scout and military 741/GDA engines when overbored to 2-3/4” (2.745” or 69.72mm) and stroked to 3-13/16” (3.8125” or 96.84mm) using
Harley-Davison 45 or Sportster stock flywheels and rods. The final product is 45.12” or 739.5cc, the same as the H-D 45.
The actual pistons are shown right, click the image for a larger version. Please: you must do your own research, measurements and calculations. No assembly has been made so far using these pistons in a 741, so this is still unexplored territory, but they offer a competitive (and price) advantage to those bold enough to attempt this ambitious project. The compression distance (measured from the wrist pin center to the piston’s top surface) is approximately 1.23”, which appears to be slightly taller than needed for this stroke, so a cylinder base shim, machining off the piston dome etc. may be needed. Final deck height is the responsibility of your engine builder and must be set properly for safe and effective use of these pistons. The H-D wrist pin at .791” is larger than the Scout at .750” but may fit the Scout pin bushing after reaming. I cannot provide any more information on this subject. The pistons are suitable for flywheels with 3-13/16” (3.8125”) and slightly larger strokes. Larger strokes will require small base shims (equal to 50% of the added stroke above 3-13/16”) and potentially minor skirt clearancing. You cannot use these pistons with stock Scout or Junior Scout flywheels, or any stroke smaller than 3-13/16”. You cannot use these pistons with “pop-up” heads, such as Sport Scout Bonneville, 648 etc. The pistons are cast in low expansion aluminum alloy, and use the thinner, late H-D 45 & K rings available anywhere.
The available pistons and rings are shown in the table below. You must specify the exact size you need. Sizes are based on std. = 2.745”. Sizes are nominal -.005” for skirt clearance. For example: a +.020” piston is actually 2.760” and requires a finish honed bore size of 2.765”, &c. Please measure your cylinders accurately, no refunds or exchanges will be made after purchase.
For ring sizes not available, the choices are:
1. Order the next larger pistons with rings.
2. Order your original size, but with .010” larger rings (for example: +.060” pistons with +.070” rings, etc.) so you can file the rings to get the correct end gap yourself.
3. Order your original size, but without rings, and purchase a ring set from another source. If you do this, deduct $20.00 from the price.
