The 1948-65 panhead big twin is a durable and reliable engine, but is a step backward in technology from the earlier knucklehead engine, which has more precise alignment of the tappets, pushrods and rocker arms. The geometry of the panhead (the alignment between the components during their range of motion) was intentionally made less accurate as a cost-cutting measure, but it can be improved with only minor work, without visible alterations.
