In 1950 Chevrolet announced the introduction of the Powerglide automatic transmission. To compensate for the power lost in the torque converter, larger 1-15/16” intake valves were added to the engine. When the new 18-bolt head and full pressure connecting rod oiling was introduced, the smaller 1-7/8” (non-Powerglide) valves became standard for all 235” and 261” engines.
These 1/16” larger Powerglide valves can be installed in the later engines, directly replacing the original valves with no more work than a normal valve job, and minor bowl enlargement for best results. This improves peak power, and also cleans up worn, recessed or pitted valve seats.
