All 1937-73 Harley-Davidson 45” (including W, WL, WLA, WLC, WLD, WLDR, WR, G, GA, GE, &c.) and 1937-48 74 & 80” U-Series flathead engines (including U, UL, UH, ULH, UMG, &c.) use the same return oil pump and the same timed crankcase breather. It’s a good compromise, and works acceptably for stock or mild engines. However, when power or RPM is increased oil control can be addressed by adopting features used in the factory racing engines beginning in 1954 in the KR.
This product includes specific instructions detailing how to accomplish this. I decided not to just add pages from the 45 & UL service manuals, diagrams of stock motors, pictures of custom bikes, etc. - you already have that information. The product is fairly modest (9,000 words) because it only contains information you'd need for the conversion. It is the best information available, and it does offer helpful hints, calculations, illustrations, comments, observations, data, etc. on this complex subject. If you’ve considered doing this, you should read this before you make any plans, or spend any money. The information applies specifically to Harley-Davidson 1937-73 45” and 74 & 80” flathead engines.
No welding or complex Bridgeport machine work is needed, this can be done entirely with hand tools at minimal expense.
I have included the S&S Cycle instructions on breather timing for the OHV big twin knucklehead, panhead and shovelhead engines. |

I guarantee that you’ll find information in this product you’ve never seen before, and that will help you plan and complete your project.
Consider this: if this product saves you from making even a single mistake or bad purchase, or gives you one new idea, doesn’t that make this purchase worth while? The price is a small fraction of what you’ll have invested in the motor - plan it more intelligently, and get better results. VICTORY LIBRARY is the original source of side-valve performance since 1971.
Please note: this is not a coffee table book, it is intended to be a research tool for those who seriously want to perform this modifiation. It is not a repair manual. If your bike won’t start, leaks, spark plugs foul, &c. my product will not help you. It does not explain how to remove, disassemble, clean or restore the engine. If you do not already have this information do not buy this product. If your engine is stock and you’re pleased with how it runs now, this product is not going to be of much use, although you might find it interesting. |
